Its effectiveness comes from matching its properties—like hardness and microstructure—to a job, using either through-hardened steel or a composite overlay material to extend equipment life.

Is a Harder Wear Plate Always Better?

No, a harder wear plate is not always better. In materials science, there is a fundamental inverse relationship between hardness and fracture toughness. As you increase the Brinell hardness (HBW) to resist scratching, the material’s ability to absorb energy without cracking typically decreases.

  • Toughness: The ability to absorb energy and deform without fracturing.

Through-Hardened vs. Composite Overlay Plates
