Seam Welding Machine – The Ultimate Guide

Seam welding machines have been an on demand item in the welding industry. Many companies in various sectors utilize it for the improvement of their businesses.

Welding and metalworking aren’t the only industries where you can use them. So long as you need complex metal welding procedures, you can find it useful.

Today, we’ll talk you through everything about Seam Welding and Seam Welding Machines.

Let’s review each of them in details.

What is Seam Welding?

Seam welding, basically, is a welding process that utilizes motor wheels, as opposed to rods.

Seam Welding

Similar to a regular welding process, its goal is to fuse two (2) or more workpieces together.

What is the Process of Seam Welding?

Most usually, metal sheets and flat workpieces are fused in a seam welding procedure.

Seam Welding Process

The process starts off by preparing the parts or components to be welded.

  1. The workpiece is loaded between the two (2) wheel electrodes
  2. When an electrical current runs on the wheels, it applies high heat to the workpiece
  3. Fusion of the workpieces occur and happen when the heat is run through the material
  4. In the process, nuggets are left and thus, creating the fusion

What are Nuggets in Seam Welding?

Nuggets

Nuggets are the trails molten metal. It’s usually a trail signifying the fusion of two workpieces or materials.

What’s Seam Welding Used For?

You can use seam welding if you want to create liquid or gaseous joints; or if the sheets you’re working on would need to withstand high amounts of pressure or impact.

Seam Welding Used For

Seam welding is used because of its strength, resistance, and overall – durability.

Is Stitch Welding the Same as Seam Welding?

Since both terms come from the fabric or textile industry, many people get it wrong.

Stitch Welding

Stitch welding and seam welding are two (2) different processes. Although it may seem like they’re the same, they’re actually not.

Seam welding uses a continuous weld to form the joint at the seams. You would usually need a seam weld if you’re joining or fusing intersecting materials.

Stitch welding does not have a continuous weld. Instead, it consists of broken up spaces in gaps between the welds, thus, forming the look of it being “stitched.” Moreover, it’s known as a “type” of seam welding.

Both processes are used for joints, but they differ in terms of the welding procedure.

Different Types of Seam Welding

There are different types of seam welding and they can be categorized into the following:

Types of Seam Welding

Standard Seam Welding

This is the type of seam welding that you can do if you want to produce leak-proof and continuous welds.

It also is the most regular type of seam welding procedure.

Continuous Motion Seam

Also known as mash seam, this is a type of seam weld done through rotating electrodes.

The difference it has with the standard seam is that you would need to determine the speed of the rotators first, creating the impulses that result to the overlapping weld.

Intermittent Seam Welding

From the term alone, you’d already know what this is. It’s also commonly known as a stitch weld and the inconsistent pulses that the wheels provide the joining or the fusing of the workpieces.

Doing this can give you stitch-like results of the weld.

Where Can Seam Welding be Applied To?

You can use seam welding in a wide spectrum of applications.

Seam Welding Applied To

Mostly, you can use it in applications where the sheets will be used s where fluids and gas would be used or contained.

The following are the most common sectors where you can apply seam welding:

  • Brewery Barrels
  • Tubing and Piping
  • Steel Fuel Tanks (Petrol Tanks)
  • Radiators
  • Transformers
  • Aircraft Tanks
  • And Many More

What is a Seam Welding Machine and Its Usual Components?

They are the machines to help you with the seam welding process.

Seam Welding Machine Components

The most usual parts and components of these equipment are:

  • Wheel Electrode (Up and Down)
  • Throat
  • Friction Drive Wheel
  • Motor
  • Power Supply

Of course, other manufacturers might have other parts, which they’ve added. But, these are just some of the general primary components that seam welding machines have.

Are Seam Welding Machines Automatic?

Most seam welding machines made and manufactured today are automatic. However, there are also some that are semi-automatic, as well as some that’s manually operated.

Its control system will depend on the manufacturer, as well as the machine itself. You can find a wide range of machines from welding material manufacturers and welding companies.

What’s a Longitudinal Seam Welding Machine?

Longitudinal seam welding machines are the equipment used to create longitudinal welds. Basically, it’s a weld that runs from atop the workpiece, going downwards.

Longitudinal Seam Welding Machine

You would want to perform this if you’re to weld two metals together, end to end.

What’s a Circumferential Seam Welder?

Circumferential seam welding machines are machines that can help you weld two round objects.

Circumferential Seam Welder

Instead of being welded at ends, you can create the weld around their circumferences.

What’s a Corner Seam Welding Machine?

Corner Seam Welding Machine

It’s a seam welding machine that you can use to weld the edges of metal sheets to one another.

Where Can You Find the Best Seam Welding Company?

The wide majority of welding companies can help you with a seam welding process. However, finding the best one can be a bit of a challenge.
