Once the thin hard layer is gone, the wear rate accelerates dramatically, and the component fails unexpectedly. With Hardox, the hardness is consistent from the surface right to the core. A plate that is extremely hard will be more brittle, like glass. A plate with excellent toughness can bend or deform under extreme stress without fracturing.
