4 TIPS TO BUY CHROMIUM CARBIDE OVERLAY PLATE

Uncategorized

HALDEN WEAR PLATE BUYING GUIDE

4 Tips for Buying Chromium Carbide Overlay Plate

Choosing the right chromium carbide overlay plate is not only about hardness or price. The real value comes from overlay chemistry, dilution control, plate size capability, fabrication performance, and whether the wear plate is matched to your actual working condition.

How to Evaluate a Chromium Carbide Overlay Plate Supplier

Chromium carbide overlay plate, also called CCO plate, is widely used in mining, cement, steel, power generation, glass, bulk material handling and heavy industrial maintenance. It is designed to protect equipment surfaces from severe abrasion and extend service life.

However, not all CCO plates perform the same. A plate that looks acceptable from the outside may still have poor alloy design, excessive dilution, inconsistent weld beads, unsuitable plate size, or weak fabrication performance.

HALDEN recommends looking beyond surface appearance and comparing the plate based on real working conditions, overlay chemistry, manufacturing quality and installation needs.

Buying Checklist

  • Overlay chemistry
  • Dilution control
  • Hardness consistency
  • Wear mechanism matching
  • Plate size capability
  • Surface and bead quality
  • Cutting, forming and installation support

Do Not Judge by Layers Alone

More overlay passes do not automatically mean better wear life. Alloy quality and dilution control matter more.

Match the Chemistry

Extreme abrasion, abrasion with impact, temperature and corrosion require different overlay alloy systems.

Understand Surface Cracks

Fine stress-relief cracks are normal on many CCO plates and help reduce welding stress in the overlay layer.

Choose Larger Plate Capability

Larger plate formats improve nesting flexibility and reduce unnecessary splicing during liner fabrication.

Tip 1: Do Not Buy CCO Plate by Overlay Layers Alone

One common misconception is that more overlay passes automatically create a better chromium carbide overlay plate. In reality, performance depends on the alloy system, carbide formation, dilution control, welding process and whether the plate is suitable for the application.

A well-designed single-pass overlay can perform very well if the chemistry is correct and the overlay layer is deposited with proper process control. Multiple passes may be useful for specific thickness requirements, but they should not be used as the only indicator of quality.

What to Ask the Supplier

  • What is the overlay chemical composition?
  • What is the actual hardfacing layer thickness?
  • What is the expected dilution level?
  • Is the overlay designed for abrasion only, or abrasion with impact?
  • Can the supplier provide hardness and inspection records?

Tip 2: Choose the Right Chemistry for the Wear Condition

Different applications require different overlay chemistry. A chute liner handling fine abrasive particles is not the same as a crusher liner exposed to abrasion and impact. A high-temperature wear area is also different from a room-temperature sliding abrasion application.

A reliable supplier should be able to recommend different CCO plate grades or hardfacing alloy systems according to your actual wear problem.

Wear Condition Material Requirement Selection Focus
Severe Sliding Abrasion High chromium carbide volume fraction Hardness, carbide distribution and low dilution
Abrasion with Impact Balanced wear resistance and toughness Avoid overly brittle overlay design
High Temperature Wear Heat-resistant alloy system Thermal stability and oxidation resistance
Material Flow with Build-Up Smooth surface or special overlay design Low friction, flow behavior and wear resistance

Tip 3: Do Not Judge a CCO Plate by Paint or Surface Appearance Alone

Chromium carbide overlay plates often show visible stress-relief cracks on the hardfacing surface. These fine cracks are a normal result of the cooling and contraction difference between the hard overlay layer and the steel backing plate.

In many CCO plates, these cracks are not defects. They help release residual stress and support forming, bending or rolling operations. What matters is whether the overlay layer is bonded properly, whether the cracks are within normal limits and whether there is spalling, delamination or poor weld consistency.

Fully painted surfaces should be evaluated carefully. Paint may be required by customer specification, but it should not be used to hide inconsistent weld beads, surface defects or poor overlay quality.

Normal Surface Feature

Fine stress-relief cracks on chromium carbide overlay plates are common and generally expected.

Warning Signs

Large spalling, delamination, uneven overlay, poor bead fusion or hidden defects under heavy paint require attention.

Better Evaluation

Check hardness, thickness, bead consistency, flatness, backing plate quality and actual service reference.

Tip 4: Choose a Supplier with Large Plate and Fabrication Capability

Plate size matters when you need large liners, chute panels, hopper liners, crusher liners or complex cut parts. If a supplier can only provide small plates, your parts may need unnecessary splicing, which can increase installation time and reduce liner efficiency.

Larger plate formats can improve nesting flexibility, reduce joints and help create more efficient liner layouts. For custom parts, fabrication capability is just as important as plate production capability.

Supplier Capability to Confirm

  • Maximum plate size available
  • Standard thickness combinations
  • Cutting, bending and rolling capability
  • Stud welding or countersunk hole preparation
  • Drawing-based custom liner fabrication
  • Packing and export delivery experience

CCO Plate Buying Evaluation Matrix

Evaluation Item What to Check Why It Matters
Overlay Chemistry Cr, C, carbide system and alloy design Determines real wear resistance
Hardness HRC / HV values and consistency Confirms overlay performance, but should not be the only factor
Plate Size Standard and maximum available dimensions Affects nesting, fabrication and installation efficiency
Surface Condition Bead consistency, cracks, spalling, delamination Helps identify real manufacturing quality
Fabrication Support Cutting, bending, rolling, holes, studs, welding Turns plate into usable liners and parts

What Information Should You Send for a CCO Plate Quotation?

To receive an accurate recommendation, send HALDEN your wear condition, drawing and technical requirement instead of only asking for price per square meter.

Plate Requirement

  • Base + overlay thickness
  • Required plate size
  • Quantity or total square meters
  • Hardness requirement
  • Surface type: standard or smooth

Application Details

  • Equipment name
  • Material handled
  • Wear mode
  • Impact level
  • Operating temperature

Fabrication Needs

  • Cutting drawing
  • Hole or stud position
  • Bending or rolling radius
  • Installation method
  • Destination country or port

Frequently Asked Questions

Is more overlay pass always better for CCO plate?

No. More passes do not automatically mean better performance. Overlay chemistry, dilution control, carbide formation and application matching are more important than simply counting layers.

Are cracks on chromium carbide overlay plate normal?

Fine stress-relief cracks are normal on many chromium carbide overlay plates. They help release residual stress in the hard overlay layer and are different from harmful delamination or spalling.

Why should I care about plate size?

Larger plate size improves nesting flexibility, reduces unnecessary splicing and can reduce installation time for large liners or custom wear parts.

What makes a reliable CCO plate supplier?

A reliable supplier should provide suitable alloy options, stable overlay quality, large plate capability, fabrication support, inspection records and practical application guidance.

Need Chromium Carbide Overlay Plate for Your Equipment?

Send HALDEN your drawing, wear condition, required thickness, plate size, quantity and installation method. We will help recommend a suitable CCO plate or fabricated wear liner solution for your application.
